Education Investment, Outcomes and Impact

The OECD report Education at a Glance publication includes a range of indicators on access and participation in education, levels of educational attainment, financial resources invested, and the benefits of education — to individuals, the economy, and society.

Science & Technology Indicators

The OECD’s associated Science, Technology and Industry Scoreboard and Outlook publications together provide a comprehensive picture of Australia’s performance in science, technology and innovation, based on internationally comparable indicators.

Research Intensity & Output

The Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) includes information on university research income from competitive grants, government, and industry sources. This data is provided to the Department of Education Training from individual universities and is used as the basis for research block grant allocations.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics publication Research and Experimental Development provides an overview of research and development (R&D) activity in Australia by government, business, and the higher education sector.

Data on R&D by type of activity — namely basic research, applied research, or experimental development — and field of research is also available. The OECD publish regular statistics comparing Australia’s performance in R&D to that of other countries.

Gender Equity

Universities Australia produces gender equity statistics that highlight the status of senior academic and professional women in Australian higher education institutions comparative to the status of males and other females in the sector.
