Vale Professor Emma Johnston AO

Australia’s universities are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Emma Johnston AO, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

Professor Johnston was one of Australia’s most accomplished marine scientists and a highly respected university leader during a distinguished career across some of Australia’s leading universities.

A prominent national advocate for science and research, Professor Johnston’s contributions were recognised with her appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2018.

Universities Australia Chair Professor Carolyn Evans said Professor Johnston would be remembered for her academic excellence, generosity of spirit and principled leadership.

“Emma was an extraordinary scientist and research leader whose work shaped our understanding of the marine environment and whose voice brought science to life,” Professor Evans said.

“Her passion, clarity and commitment were unmistakable.

“As a university leader, including as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, she led with integrity, generosity and strength.

“What I will remember most about Emma is that in every conversation, she would ask, ‘How can I help?’

“That is an extraordinary quality in an extraordinary person. We are devastated by her passing.

“Emma will be profoundly missed by her colleagues at Melbourne and other institutions across our sector and by marine scientists around the world who had the privilege of working with her.

“Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this difficult time.”
