Amendments agreed in the Senate last night mean universities are now included within the scope of Jobs and Skills Australia.
“A strong and productive economy is built on a skilled workforce,” Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said.
“Universities play a central role in educating these workers – from teachers, nurses and doctors to engineers, technology professionals and lawyers, to name just some.
“Many of these industries are grappling with skill shortages right now and those shortages can only be solved by having more skilled workers in our economy. Universities are here to help.
“We know that more than half of the one million jobs expected to be created in the next five years will require a university degree, reinforcing our sector’s role in keeping Australia strong and secure.
“We look forward to continuing to work closely with the government to ensure universities have the policy settings they need to continue building Australia’s future.”
