Reports have emerged that university deans and staff have been suspended in the wake of the failed coup attempt.
Universities Australia’s Chief Executive Belinda Robinson said it was important to maintain academic freedom.
“University autonomy and academic freedom are internationally recognised principles underpinning peaceful democratic development and human endeavour”, she said.
“Universities Australia is concerned with reports about action taken against universities and university staff in Turkey and joins with the European University Association in expressing support for the higher education sector”, Ms Robinson said.
