Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Luke Sheehy said Professor Rose’s extensive experience and leadership would be a major asset to the Commission. 

“Professor Rose is one of Australia’s most respected Indigenous education leaders, and I warmly congratulate him on his appointment,” Mr Sheehy said. 

“His deep experience across higher education, vocational education and training, public policy, governance and Indigenous community advocacy makes him exceptionally well placed to take on this important role. 

“Professor Rose has dedicated his career to expanding opportunity and improving outcomes for First Nations Australians. 

“A university education can change the course of a person’s life, and we need to make sure more First Nations Australians have the opportunity not only to enter university, but to thrive and succeed once they are there. 

“His appointment will ensure First Nations perspectives and aspirations are embedded in the ATEC’s work as it helps shape the future of Australia’s tertiary education system. 

“We look forward to working with Professor Rose alongside Chief Commissioner Professor Barney Glover AO and Commissioners Ms Fiona Nash, Professor Stephen Duckett and Mr David Coltman as the ATEC gets on with delivering its important reform agenda. 

“I also thank Professor Tom Calma AO for his contribution as interim First Nations Commissioner. His leadership and expertise have helped establish a strong foundation for this important role, and we wish him well.”
