Our researchers hold the skills, knowledge and ideas that will continue to power the economy, help deliver national priorities and contribute to a Future Made in Australia.
The Board will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of the nation’s research system, focusing on decisions that serve the national interest.
This move addresses the long-standing issues of political interference and delays that have previously impeded researchers’ work.
Universities and researchers must be supported and empowered to continue undertaking the work that will guide Australia through challenges and opportunities over the coming decades.
A strong research system built on governance, peer review and transparency will enable this work and ensure the smooth and effective running of our world-class university system.
Establishing an independent Board was a key recommendation in the review led by Professor Margaret Sheil AO, and we are pleased it has been implemented by Minister Clare.
We congratulate Professor Peter Shergold AC and Professor Susan Dodds FAHA on their appointment as Chair and Deputy Chair of the ARC Board.
They will be supported by Distinguished Professor Maggie Walter, Professor Cindy Shannon AM, Professor Paul Wellings CBE, Emeritus Professor Margaret Harding, Mr Mark Stickells AM and Ms Sally-Ann Williams FTSE – all highly regarded individuals who will bring strong research expertise.
