The Australian Government today endorsed the higher education recommendations of the Noonan review of the Australian Qualifications Framework.
It has also endorsed the review’s proposed changes to vocational qualifications – which will be discussed with the States and Territories.
Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said universities were pleased to see the Government’s endorsement of the recommendations.
“The aim of this review was really to bring the framework into the 21st century so it better aligns student skills and capabilities under each qualification type,” she said.
“It’s not known widely enough that there are many pathways between VET and university courses, and students can build on skills gained in one system with a further qualification from the other.”
“If you have a diploma or certificate from TAFE, these qualifications could be recognised for credit towards a university degree.”
“In the future, many more Australians will take advantage of life-long learning, with some university and some VET study. It is encouraging to see policy settings revised with that flexibility in mind.”
Ms Jackson said it was crucial to Australia’s future to have two strong post-school education systems – higher education and vocational education – working in close alignment.
The review recommends a consultative process with both sectors ahead of implementing changes.
“Universities Australia will continue to provide advice on how to highlight pathways for students and make it easier for them to navigate between systems,” Ms Jackson said.
