Media Release 21 February 2020

Student wellbeing and support remain our focus as travel rules extended

Australia’s universities will continue to do all they can to support our international students after an extension of restrictions on travellers from China for another week until 29 February.

Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said universities would continue to offer their students maximum flexibility and support.

“Almost every student who is unable to enter Australia has now been contacted by their university. They’ve been offered support, reassurance and revised plans for this semester.”

Ms Jackson said universities had implemented all of Australia’s official health advice rigorously.
“From the start of this evolving situation with COVID-19, Australia’s universities have adhered meticulously to the advice of Australian health authorities. We will continue to do so.”

Ms Jackson said it was difficult to estimate the financial impact of the travel restrictions, but “our bottom line is looking after our students.”

“It’s too early to know the full financial impact on universities, and on the Australian economy more broadly,” she said.

“A lot will depend on how long travel restrictions continue, and the mitigating effect of flexible study options.”

“But we expect there will be some financial repercussions and they are a matter of ongoing analysis and conversation with Government.”

“The safety and wellbeing of all members of our communities is our utmost priority.”
