Media Release 8 December 2025

Strengthening Australia’s education and research ties with India

Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Luke Sheehy will join Australian government ministers and sector leaders in New Delhi this week for the Australia–India Education and Skills Council meeting.

The visit, led by Minister for Education Jason Clare, Minister for Skills and Training Andrew Giles and Assistant Minister for International Education Julian Hill, reflects the strength of Australia’s partnership with India and the shared ambition to expand education, skills and research collaboration.

Ministers and sector leaders will meet India’s Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan at the Education and Skills Council meeting. The visit will also include sector roundtables and engagements with Indian institutions and senior officials.

“Australia and India share a deep and enduring partnership built on education,” Mr Sheehy said.

“Our universities connect our countries – through research that tackles global challenges, joint degrees and the exchange of student and academic staff.

“This visit is an opportunity to take our partnership even further.”

The visit will focus on expanding collaboration in areas including online and blended learning, quality assurance, qualification recognition and joint research addressing shared national priorities.

Mr Sheehy said universities are strongly committed to supporting the Albanese Government’s efforts to grow, diversify and deepen Australia’s international education relationships.

“India is Australia’s second-largest source of international students, and our academic and research links continue to grow every year,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to working with government and our Indian partners on practical steps that build skills, drive innovation and support the long-term prosperity of both our nations.”

The delegation will visit New Delhi from 8-9 December 2025.
