Media Release 4 April 2017

Statement on national student prevalence survey on sexual assault and harassment by Universities Australia

Media reports today regarding the national student prevalence survey on sexual assault and sexual harassment, run as part of the Universities Australia Respect. Now. Always. initiative, were incorrect.

In keeping with the protocol for research in the university sector, the national prevalence survey on sexual assault and sexual harassment received ethics approval from the University of New South Wales Human Research Ethics Committee in August 2016.

Universities Australia wants to reassure students who participated in the survey that results will be used by universities to guide further improvements in how they can better prevent and respond to sexual assault and harassment, and support survivors.

Universities Australia asked the Australian Human Rights Commission to conduct this work because universities are committed to building on and improving their policies, programs and safety initiatives.

Each university will be provided with an institutional report by the Commission.

Today the Chair of Universities Australia Professor Barney Glover said while the release of the institutional reports is a matter for each university, he anticipates that all universities will release the institutional level data at the same time as the release of the national report.
