National AI plan a sensible step forward for productivity and prosperity

Universities Australia welcomes the Albanese Government’s National AI Plan 2025 as a timely and important step towards safely harnessing the economic and social benefits of AI.

“AI is already reshaping industries, jobs and everyday life,” Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Luke Sheehy said.

“This plan provides the national direction we need to adopt, develop and use AI responsibly.

“AI represents a huge opportunity for Australia – it can supercharge our research, lift productivity and create new high-value jobs, but only if we get the settings right.

“Universities are at the heart of building Australia’s AI capability – from world-class research and commercialisation to educating the skilled workforce our economy will depend on.

“The plan rightly recognises that government, industry and universities must work in partnership for Australia to compete globally and use AI safely.

“With the right policy settings, investment and safeguards, universities can help ensure Australia is not just a user of AI technologies but a developer of them, driving innovation, productivity and national prosperity.

“We look forward to continuing our work with government, industry and the community to ensure AI is used safely, responsibly and for the benefit of all Australians.
