Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Luke Sheehy said education is already our largest services export, worth around $50 billion to the economy.

“Closer connections with the UAE will only boost the significant contribution it makes to our economy and social cohesion,” Mr Sheehy said.

“This development holds enormous potential for Australian universities, particularly in expanding educational exports and deepening international research efforts.

“The UAE is already an important market for Australian education exports, with three Australian universities operating campuses in the region.

“The UAE is a vital gateway for Australia’s presence in the Middle East and we welcome the opportunity to strengthen our engagement through education exports and research collaboration.

“A comprehensive trade agreement with the UAE will create new pathways for universities to collaborate in areas including renewable energy, digital technology and innovation.

“These are key areas for Australia if we are to transition to a net zero future.

“Our universities are global leaders in research and education, and we look forward to working with the Albanese Government as part of continuing negotiations to ensure the agreement delivers even greater collaboration for the benefit of all Australians.”
