Voting is open for the People’s Choice Awards in the 2026 Shaping Australia Awards, celebrating 15 outstanding university-led projects that are making a real difference across the country.
From AI technology that could save millions in combustible cladding costs and innovations protecting native fish, to programs supporting Aboriginal families and inspiring the next generation of space explorers, this year’s finalists demonstrate how universities are turning ideas into practical solutions with real-world impact.
Anyone can vote in the People’s Choice Awards, giving Australians the opportunity to recognise the university-led initiatives making a difference in communities across the country. More than 42,500 votes were cast last year, demonstrating strong public support for the awards.
The finalists are competing across three categories: teaching, research and community service. Australians can vote for their favourite initiative at shapingaustraliaawards.com.au.
Michelle Gunn, chair of the Shaping Australia Awards judging panel, said universities play a crucial role in shaping Australia’s future.
“These projects show how universities turn research and ideas into practical solutions that improve lives, strengthen communities and help shape Australia’s future,” Ms Gunn said.
Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Luke Sheehy said the People’s Choice Awards gives Australians the opportunity to recognise the university initiatives having a tangible impact beyond campus.
“These finalists reflect the many ways universities contribute to Australia’s success, from tackling local challenges to advancing solutions with national significance.”
